I am very interested in these answers because I have the same problem BUT gents who have already answered. AVG is no longer free!! Starting on 2/18 whoever is on a free program will either have to upgrade or end their program. I have gone to the new site and even tho AVG ''SAYS''it will continue offering their anti-virus ware free--I sure can't find it on their site. I am really tired of their ''definitions'' waiting for me every morning when I go on-line. I have RAM full of AVG logs and don't know how to delete them--yet. u need a good video card or graphics card along with 512mb ram minimum, do not disable anti virus game will have common virus in them.
Right click on the AVG icon in the taskbar and click on ''guit avg control centre''

But I think its highly unlikely that avg is doing that..It sounds more like your graphics card isn't up to running the game..

Go into start then run and type in dxdiag and try altering the settings..Keep a record of default settings so you can edit them back..

I can't speak for PCTools Anti-Virus but both the PC Tools Firewall and PC Tools Threatfire are very good.

I would definitely recommned Kaspersky. I have had multiple trojan horse viruses installed onto my computer and this was one of the only programs that found all of them. If you purchase the software, it comes with all the extras like a firewall, internet security, etc. It's awesome! I purchased it and have not had any problems since. The full internet security and antivirus was 80.00. Well worth it! Most antivirus software have updates weekly, but Kaspersky updates itself every single day, sometimes multiple times a day! As far as a firewall, best for free is the Windows firewall if you are using Windows XP SP2 or Vista. If not you will have to pay for a good firewall program.

Do yourself a favor and make sure you have a REAL virus protector in place and keep it up to date. DO NOT use one of the free registry scrubbers or antivirus tools so many here suggest. Some of these are just ok, but far too many are themselves evilware and most of them are pretty flimsy. Some actually implant other spyware, adware or even viruses or trojans on your system and make things worse--far worse. The problem with a weak antivirus program is that it gives you a false sense of security--like Airborne cold-preventer. Using nothing at all would be better as you would be more careful about where you venture on the Internet.

I have not exaustively tested the top-rated dozen or so serious antivirus programs (of the many dozen out there) but PCWorld has; so has Consumer Reports. AVG is the lowest-rated. I would not depend on first-hand accounts from end-users and amateurs but instead, look for opinions from computer _professionals_ whose job it is to analyze these _essential_ programs. Using a free antivirus program is like buying cancer drugs from that guy on a street corner...

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

I use AVG Free (free.grisoft.com) to remove viruses for my clients. They usually have Norton or McAfee and I'll use the AVG to remove viruses that Norton or McAfee missed.

AVG is fast and free. I would recommend it anyday over Norton. Keep in mind that *ALL* antivirus software suffers from the same fatal flaw. They are all reactive software. In other words, if a virus comes out tomorrow and new virus definitions haven't been released, then no antivirus software will catch the new virus. So, it boils down to which antivirus company updates the most against new viruses. AVG updates every day...you can't get better than that.

AVG has poor detection rates. The free version does not come with the ewido engine that is part of the pro version. it doesn't shape up well against other free products, and should be avoided if you want to the best protection for your machine. Using those Anti-virus programs from free site is just to get a virus. None of them to my knowledge are of any real use; all they do is give you a false since of protection.

So many times I have heard people say ''well I had an AV program, what happened?'' in each and every case that I heard of where the virus got through an anti-virus program the programs were either freeware or MacAfee. Below is an excellent program. A couple bucks up front can save a couple hundred for a repair down the road.

Many people use AVG free edition. Some things to note about AVG, is that it only supports a small amount of computers (will not install on servers or WinXP 64 bit versions) and there is no quick way of temporarily turning off the active monitoring. Another free AV is Antivir, this application has decent detection rates, but is limited on features.

In my opinion (if you have to use free) the best AV scanner is AVAST anti-virus, it supports almost any platform and has many extra features. I don't know the specifics but avast also seems to run much faster on many computers. AVG can be slow and bloated.

Windows Defender is a spyware scanning and removal tool so you do have spyware. AVG free is an excellent product. I have used both of these programs together on my 2 laptops, my girlfriend's and my mum's PCs for well over a year now and none of them have had any problems with anything nasty getting onto the individual systems so you should have no problems. I have full confidence in both programs. You may have to uninstall your Tiscali antivirus to prevent any potential conflicts with the AVG software though.

Don't listen to that guy that just moronically told you to Pirate a copy of anti virus and use a keygen. Not only is that illegal, keygens screw your computer up and your antivirus key/serial will eventually be black listed and you will have almost no protection. Avg is good, but I think Avast is better. That is what I use now.

I just bought a new computer and its clean and smooth of the bat. Then AVG free edition just says it has viruses! I mean kaspersky said I'm clean and so did mcafee, symantec, and verizon security!! I hav purchased each product cuz i felt like it, and, i tried out each one and they all said clean. I mostly stick with verizon security suite, cuz i've had no problem with it and it kept my computer safe for about 5 years! No viruses are in any of my 3 computers. Plus new computers arent suppose to have viruses!!

If you have more than one anti-virus software loaded, your computer will run very slow plus the anti-virus software will treat others as virus (if you unload other anti-virus but did not remove them completely). Pick one of mcafee, symantec, or kaspersky update the virus signature file and run detail scan, you will be save enough to keep your PC operating running smooth. Get rid of AVG free edition, it will not be the same class as those three you have already used.

AVG has worked very well for me as far as anti-virus programs go. I've had no problems and the updates are fast but not extremely frequent. As far as registry cleaners go, CC cleaner also has worked very well. It clears out the registry where other programs have not. Both can be downloaded on their respected sites.

The main reason computers run slow is not enough RAM.

Whichever program you decide to use, once you've downloaded and installed it, check for the latest updates and perform a full system scan. Doing this at least once a week, will minimise the risk of viruses etc.

It would need to be purchased again.....or you can do a format of your hard drive and install it again.....it will be good for another year then.
